Homelessness Prevention Service Scoop National Awards

Innovative services which help prevent young Charnwood residents from becoming homeless have scooped two prestigious national awards.

Services offered by Loughborough-based housing advice service The Bridge, in partnership with, and funded by Charnwood Borough Council, were acknowledged at the National Children and Young People Now awards ceremony in London.

The Single Access Point and Talk²Sort Mediation initiatives picked up the “Advice and Guidance Award” and the “Preventative Work Award” at the ceremony which commemorated inspiring initiatives taking place all over the UK by professionals who work hard to improve the life chances of children and young people.

The ceremony, on November 26 2009, was opened by the Children’s Secretary Ed Balls who said: “The practitioners and volunteers who dedicate their energies to bettering the lives of children, young people and their families don't do it for financial reward: they do it to make a difference.”

Charnwood’s innovative services were set up to work with young people experiencing problems where they are living.

The services focus on, and support the council’s Housing Needs Team in preventing homelessness amongst this vulnerable age group. Talk²Sort, the mediation service, opened its doors in 2003 and has had a significant impact in resolving family conflict.

The Single Access Point has seen a 93 per cent reduction in the use of bed and breakfasts by 16/17 year olds since its pilot year in May 2008.

Councillor John Bush, Lead Member for Housing and Health at Charnwood Borough Council, said: “Both of these services continue to ensure that the numbers of young people becoming homeless in the borough are minimal.

“A lot of hard work and dedication has gone into offering these services and the results of these national awards recognise the achievement of the partnership as it continues to improve the life chances of vulnerable young people across the Borough of Charnwood.”
